Ideal Itinerary for visiting Munnar, 2 Days

Day 1: Mattupetty to Top Station

Photo Point:

Photo Point is a beautiful spot on Mattupetty road at a distance of 3 km from Munnar. It truly justifies its name as it is a famous photography point in Munnar due to its magnificent scenic background of lush green tea gardens. Selfie lovers will love this place, it's simply picture-perfect.

It is a private property owned by Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Limited but visitors can take photographs at the entrance of the garden without disturbing the plantations.

Mattupetty Dam

Mattupetty Dam is located approximately 13 km from Munnar on Top Station Road. The lake and dam and the nearby tea ground makes a great view. 

The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Idukki, has made arrangements for the people to enjoy different boating facilities like speed launch, slow speedboat, pedal boat, rowboat, and motorboats. Boating in Mattupetty Lake is a memorable experience. This place is also famous for Eucalyptus Oil, which is sold near the dam.

Mattupetty Boating Timings: 9 AM to 5:30 PM

Mattupetty is also famous for its highly specialized dairy farm, an Indo-swiss project. This farm has hundreds of high yielding cattle, that can be seen grazing freely on the hills. Watching these cattle is a unique experience in itself. It is open for visitors between 9 AM to 11 AM and 2 PM to 3:30 PM.

 Echo Point

Echo Point is a beautiful place situated on the way to Top Station between Mattupetty Dam and Kundala Lake. This beautiful and captivating beauty is the junction of three well-known mountain ranges namely Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundala. This place “echo point” gets its name due to the natural echo phenomenon. This point is situated at the top in Munnar. Due to which the sound gets echoed back to you.

 You can indulge in a peaceful walk around the gentle slopes of the hills here, or go for boating in the serene waters of the lake.

 Kundala Lake

Kundala has located approximately 20 km from Munnar on the way to Top Station. The lake is formed by Kundala artificial dam, which is a small dam in a cured shape. People love to see the Cherry gardens here, that blossoms twice in a year and make the surroundings of the lake even more attractive. The place is also the homeland of the world-famous Neelakurinji flower which blooms only once in twelve years.

One can try different types of boating facilities here, like pedal boating, Kashmiri Shikkara boating, row boating, speed boating, and more.  The unique experience of boating in Kashmiri Shikara boats in this lake is a special attraction.  A Golf Course is also located here which belongs to Tata Tea Ltd.

Boating Timings: 9 AM to 5:30 PM

 Top Station

Top Station is a breathtakingly beautiful place on Kerala - Tamilnadu border at a distance of 32 km from Munnar. Top Station got its name from the fact that it was the uppermost railway station, located in the Kundala Valley. From here, one can get 360 degrees view of the Western Ghats.

This destination is popular for many reasons, however, the famous Neelakurinji flowers (Strobilanthus), which bloom once in twelve years, makes this place special among tourists. Top Station is the highest approachable road in South India.

The viewpoint at Top Station offers breathtakingly beautiful views of Kannan Devan Hills. The valleys all around, the misty mountains and distant waterfalls all make this place a must-visit spot in Munnar.

 

Day 2: Pothamedu to Chinnakanal

 Rajamalai / Eravikulam National Park

Rajamalai is a tiny hill station located inside Eravikulam National Park on Munnar - Udumalpet Road. Eravikulam National Park is Kerala’s first national park. This park is famous for its collection of tahr. Nilgiri tahr is a goat-like species that are endangered. One can easily spot tahr in this park. Some rare animals and endangered species of butterflies can be spotted here. The park is also famous for a great view of tea plantation, rolling hills, and Neelakurunji, which blooms once in 12 years. 

The park is extended into Tamil Nadu and known as Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary. The Eravikulam National Park covers 97 square kilometer area along the famous Western Ghats. Munnar wildlife division and the Forest and wildlife division of Kerala run it. The park is a heritage site. The Eravikulam national park’s terrain includes hill plateau, grasslands, sholas, mountain peak, perennial streams that merge with Periyar River or Pamba River, waterfalls and others.

Tourists can take safari and trekking tours inside the park. Entry to the park is adjacent to Munnar - Udumalpet Main Road. Private vehicles are not allowed into the park and visitors can park the vehicles at the entrance and board forest department minibus. The bus rides tourists into the sanctuary and stops at the base of the Eravikulam peak from where a 2 km walk will lead to the mountain peak with viewpoint which offers a panoramic view of the Anamudi Peak and other peaks of the Western Ghats.

 

Timings: 8 AM - 4.30 PM (safari duration is 2-3 hours). Closed from 1st Feb to 31st March.

 Tea Museum

At a distance of 3.5 km from Munnar,  the KDHP Museum, popularly known as Tata Tea Museum, is located in the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea. The museum is owned by Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Limited owned by Tata Group.

The museum exhibits the story of Munnar that how it was transformed from an unoccupied piece of land to an expansive plantation town. Photographs and old machines that were used in tea processing can be seen on display.

The museum is situated in a scenic location on Pooyankuty Road on the outskirts of Munnar town.

Timings: 10 AM to 4 PM. Monday Holiday.

 Rose Garden

The Rose Gardens of Munnar is spread over 2 acres of land, at a distance of 4 km from Munnar. This garden mainly attracts nature enthusiasts from all over the world to check out the different species of flowers. The various different plants included are- vanilla, fruits, cardamom, spices, etc. Due to the presence of such flora, this garden emits wonderful aromas that will refresh your mind.

 

The garden is operated by the Kerala Forest Development Centre (KFDC), a Govt. of Kerala undertaking. This place has an amenity center for tourists and a sales outlet, in addition to hundreds of rare varieties of flowers, cactus, shrubs, creepers, and herbal plants. The amenity center inside the garden has toilets, shops, snacks, coffee, etc.

Timings: 10 AM - 5 PM

 Pothamedu Viewpoint

Pothamedu Viewpoint, around 3km from Munnar, is situated on Bisonvalley road. Pothamedu View Point provides a panoramic view of Munnar, adjoining valleys and Muthirapuzha River. The rolling hills, the lush mountains and the breathtaking scenery at Pothamedu is ideal for trekking and long mountain walks.

It is a popular spot among trekkers, hikers and nature lovers for its pleasing scenic beauty. If the atmosphere is clear, one can catch a glimpse of the Muthirapuzha River and Idukki Arch Dam, which is around 60 km away from Munnar.
